consult/coach

How I work... whether coaching an executive, leader or team... or consulting on an organizational change project...

I help leaders navigate the real world of leadership and management.

I help smart people move quickly through the learning process to get unstuck, to expand their skils, to solve thorny people and organizational problems.

The Learning Process
competent

confident

anxious

clueless

We've all been "clueless" at some point as a leader - when you don't know what you don't know.

Then something happens to catch your attention and you get jolted out of blissful ignorance into becoming conscious about your lack of knowledge or skill to solve a problem or navigate a change.

That's when you move into the "anxious" stage as a leader, where you now know that you don't know. This is the uncomfortable place where you have to decide whether to learn and grow or stay stuck.

Are you struggling with your role as a leader?

Are your leadership skills holding you back?

You are an executive, senior manager, department head, project leader... a smart person who wants to be an effective leader... you want to... be more strategic... block the noise and get to the real issues... develop your staff... get people to work together... change the negative aspects of your work culture that block productivity... develop yourself to take the next step...

but you're not getting great results and you know you can't keep doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

Smart people and leadership...

The upside...

Smart people have the ability to transfer learning to new problems. They can transform their mastery of concepts and information from a set of facts into usable knowledge.

The downside...

When smart people confront problems outside of their experience or knowledge base, they often frame the problem incorrectly or try to solve the wrong problem.*

How do I help smart people be effective leaders? By focusing on what is most important - learning, relationships and developing in place. Real learning takes place on the job. Learning about yourself, learning from others and learning about group and organizational behavior takes place in real-time, not in MBA programs or Executive Development seminars. Why? Because everything hinges on relationships.

Leaders who can make things happen have one thing in common: they are skilled in relationship management. They know how to get, keep and grow productive relationships. They move faster and are more effective because they create social currency - trust.
